Pyotr Smirnov established his Smirnoff Vodka distillery in Moscow in 1864 under the trading name of PA Smirnoff, pioneering charcoal filtration in the 1870s, and becoming the first to utilise press ads along with charitable donations to the clergy to stifle anti-vodka sermons, capturing two-thirds of the Moscow market by 1886. His Smirnoff brand was reportedly a Tsar favourite. When Pyotr deceased, he was, succeeded by his third son Vladimir Smirnov. The Smirnoff Vodka company flourished and produced more than 4 million cases of Smirnoff Vodka per year.
Smirnoff Vodka Business
In 1904, the Tsar nationalised the Russian Vodka business, and Vladimir Smirnov was required to sell his company and brand. Throughout the October Revolution of 1917, the Smirnov family had to flee the country and Vladimir Smirnov re-established a plant in 1920 in Constantinople. Four years later on and he moved to Lwów, and he started to sell the Russia Smirnoff Vodka under the contemporaneous French spelling of the name, "Smirnoff". The new product sold fractionally well but not nearly as it had in Russia before 1904. Also, an added distillery was, established in Paris in 1925; nevertheless, the company was a complete shadow of its former self.
In the early 1930s, Vladimir met Rudolph Kunett, a Russian who had immigrated to the US in the 1920s and had become a successful business person in New York City. The Kunett family had been a supplier of corn and wheat to Smirnoff Vodka in Moscow since the Revolution. In 1933, Vladimir did sell Kunett the right to start producing Smirnoff Vodka in North America. He then returned to the United States, quit his sales job, and established his first North American distillery in Bethel, Connecticut, the United States in 1933. Despite, the business in the US was not as successful as Kunett had hoped. In 1938 Kunett could not afford to pay for the necessary sales licences, and contacted John Martin, president of Heublein. Heublein was a company that specialised in the import and export of Alcohol and foreign foods. Using the $14k that the Heublein business made from a new product that ended up freeing them from bankruptcy, A1 Steak Sauce, Martin bought the rights to Smirnoff Vodka in 1939. His board believed he was mad. Yankees were traditionally Whiskey drinkers unfamiliar with Vodka and so sales were very slow. In a marketing campaign, they changed the product to use Whiskey corks instead and branded it as a "White Whiskey" with "no taste, no smell".Sales picked up dramatically after that.
